Should I Choose Clay, Cement or Maxi Bricks?

When man created various bricks, they were not all created equal. When it comes to building a home, you do not want to make a mistake when choosing what type of bricks to use.

The three main types of bricks used all around South Africa are maxi brick, concrete brick and clay brick.

Cement bricks

Cement bricks are commonly used for residential housing (single or double story laying), small DIY jobs and plastered walls. When building or extending your house, cement bricks will last a long time and will provide the strength your house needs. The advantages of building with cement bricks are as follows:

  • Durability
  • Strength
  • Custom colour
  • Very affordable

Clay bricks

Clay bricks are either classified as NFP (non-facing plaster) or NFX (non-facing extra). NFP bricks are used for walls or buildings that are going to be plastered while NFX bricks are not always plastered. Clay bricks have minimum specifications of standards that they need to conform to, such as brick water absorption, efflorescence, strength and dimensional stability. The advantages of building with clay bricks are as follows:
  • Fire resistant
  • Low carbon footprint
  • Affordable
